The US has about 40 research and education networks (RENs) that connect people, universities, colleges, and schools to the Internet. The national group, the Quilt (thequilt.net), supports partnerships, contracts, conferences, and grants. Some RENs also serve hospitals, local governments, and research labs. Most RENs share common goals. MDREN recently gathered mid-Atlantic REN leaders to discuss services, ideas, strategies, and synergies. They meet monthly to address topics like Internet 2 connectivity, REN POP diversity, partnerships, grants, and strategies.
The Mid-Atlantic RENS include
MDREN (MD) – Maryland Research and Education Network
Keystone REN (PA)
Maria Inc (VA)
Caaren (DC) – Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network
The University of Delaware
All the RENs support communications, research, teaching/learning, and the business of higher education. We know there is more we can do together to support each other and our collective members.
